Teaching Aims

To enable students to learn the great city St. Petersburg and the spirit of the great people of Russia

To improve students’ reading ability

Teaching difficulty points:

Let students lean what heroes are and what makes a city great, the spirit of the great people of Russia.

Teaching methods: Discussions, fast reading, ask and answer questions.

Teaching Aids: Tape recorder

Teaching procedures:

Step I Greeting

Step II Revision

The whole class read the new words of unit 6, each one read twice.

Step III Lead-in  

Discussion and presentation

Let students exchange their home work. Discuss the questions in pre-reading part try to answer questions: what makes a city great? What are your favorite city and why? Talk about cultural relics in our hometown. Ask some student present their idea.

Step IV Reading

Part A: Let the whole class read the first paragraph

Q: Why do people think St Petersburg is a great city?

Let students read paragraph 2 and 3 by themselves very quickly and try to answer questions.

1. Why was it so difficult for people to rebuild the old palaces?

2. What did people use to help them rebuild the city?

Let students read paragraph 4   

Q: Why are the people of St Petersburg heroes?

Part B: Answer questions and try to get the main ideas of each paragraph, find the topic sentence of each paragraph.

Part C: Do post-reading exercise 2 decide the sentence True or False, and try to correct the sentence according the information in the text.

Step V Homework

Read the text again and find some language points and difficult sentence.
