Everyone wants to be successful, but unfortunately, not everyone is successful and it’s not easy to achieve success. You have to work hard and do the right things which can let yourself closer to the goal. Everyday we do a lot of things. Some are enjoyable for us, while others are not. In order to become successful, whether to do things that are enjoyable for us is a crucial problem to talk about. Some people think that people should always do things that they enjoy doing. In my opinion, however, I totally disagree. I think that people should sometimes do things that they do not enjoy doing.
To begin with, success is, for most of the time, what we use to measure things that we do. Let me give you an example. My goal is to become a bank clerk when I grow up. To achieve this, I have to work hard at math. If I enjoy studying math, I would probably achieve this goal. People are likely to succeed when they are doing things that they like. However, things don’t usually go like that. What if I don’t like math? Then should I just go to hell? No, this is life. Most of enjoyable things in our life are not constructional. Like playing computer games, it does contribute to success, but it’s too little to consider when you compare it with something like studying. On the country, most of the constructional things are not enjoyable but they can lead you to success. People should sometimes do things that they are not fond of because they are more constructional, which may lead you to success.
Secondly, doing things that aren’t enjoyable can let people become more and more persevere. If a person always does the things that he enjoys, he will probably find life is so easy, and when a really difficult challenge comes, he will give up because he has never met with this before. Let’s take chickens as an example, chickens that live in the farm can’t fly because they are lazy. They always do things that they enjoy, which is eating the food that the farmer gives them. They never hunt for food. No chickens like to hunt for food, but hunting really gives the wild chicken’s ability to fly. This is the same as perseverance to people.
Admittedly, there are some negative effects on people doing things that they do not enjoy doing. They could be less efficient since they don’t really enjoy doing them. And they probably can’t even do a good job. However, on balance, these effects seem to be minor.
In a word, the enjoyable things and non-enjoyable things are equally important to us. We should do enjoyable things for sure, but things that are not as enjoyable could be more constructional and let people become more persevere. Therefore I think that people should not only do things that they enjoy doing, but also sometimes do things that they do not enjoy doing.
