M: I have a toothache.
W: Tom, we need to sweep the floor. Could you please do it now?
W: Bob, what were you doing yesterday at the time of the rainstorm?
M: I was reading a book in my room.
W: Adam, how long have you had your bike?
M: Oh, for over three years, I think.
W: Mike, why are you at home? It’s Monday today.
M: I hurt my knees in the basketball game.
W: That sounds bad. Is it serious?
M: Not as serious as Tony. He got hit on the head and was in the hospital.
W: Oh, poor Tony.
W: How was your vacation, Rick?
M: Oh, it was great! I had a good time in Sanya!
W: No wonder you’re so dark!

W: Why don’t you have a talk with him?
M: I tried, but it didn’t work.
W: But how many times have you tried?
M: Three times. I guess I’m going to talk to the teacher. I hope he can change.
W: Well, I think you need to sit together and have a heart-to-heart talk. You can make it through.
M: I hope so.
Have you ever heard people say “be a good neighbor”? They were talking about how we can be good to our neighbors. We can be friendly and give help when they need it or even they don’t ask for it. If we are all good neighbors, we will find it would be a better place to live in. There are many ways that we can help with the neighborhood. If you can help by doing something you enjoy, won’t it be better?
So we offer you a chance to do so. We are having a Volunteer Day next Sunday. Everybody can help. We do hope to meet you at the City Hall at 7: 30 a.m. The buses will take you to different activity places to do your volunteer work. Lunch is prepared by us. After the volunteer work, we will take you back by bus to the City Hall at around 4:00 p.m. You will feel so good at the end of the day. Do come and join us!

When I started playing baseball at the age of five, my brother Stan gave me his old soft glove (手套). I was sure that I would be catching and 13 just as well as Stan did.
Unluckily, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t throw or catch a ball. The glove just didn’t feel 14 . I wanted to take it off, but my dad told me that I would get used to it. This went on for months, although I wanted to 15 , my dad wouldn’t hear of it. I didn’t want to make my dad unhappy, so I kept trying.
Then one day, everything changed. It was time for me to move from T-ball (儿童棒球) to baseball, so my father took me to the store to get a 16 glove. One glove that I slipped on (匆匆穿上) my right hand felt surprisingly good. "Take that off,” Dad said. “That glove is for a left-handed player.” 17 I didn’t want to take it off. It felt more natural than any glove I had ever worn.
I kept the glove on my right hand and picked up a 18 with my left hand. Right there in the store, I tossed (投掷) the ball to my dad. It was amazing. The ball went straight to him. And when he tossed it back, I caught it. Suddenly, I saw what my 19 had been all these years. I’m a left-handed thrower! My dad and I were both 20 because I eat and write with my right hand.
That very day, I started throwing and batting (击球) left-handed. Within a few weeks I had 21 from the outfield to first base. In time I became one of the best players on my team.
Today Stan’s old glove sits on a shelf in my room. It reminds me to always 22 my instincts (直觉). Sometimes the answer to a problem is as simple as trying a new glove — on the other hand!

You just arrived home. Lunch was hours ago, and you are hungry. You open a bag and take a piece of bread. You feel a lot better, but you wonder—is snacking a bad habit?
While snacking on bad foods can lead to poor health, many experts say good snacking is healthy for you. Snacks can provide you with more energy (能量) between meals. For example, eating an apple can keep you from being unhappy. A few cookies after school might stop you overeating (eating too much) at dinner.
There are other reasons for snacking. Kids go through rapid growth spurts (快速增长), which begin around age 10. You need more nutrients (营养) for that rapid growth. The rapid growth affects every organ (器官) in your body, including your brain. Nutrients such as iron become important. Your bones also grow. You may get growing pains because your bones and muscles are growing so fast.
Depending on your activity level (水平), you might need more calories to kick a soccer ball or ride your bike.
You need the right snack at the right time. Snacks should never replace meals but should be eaten at about the same time each day. School-age kids usually eat three meals a day and should have a light snack between each meal. One snack might be eaten mid-morning and the other after school.
The best snacks have less sugar, fat, and salt. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and snacks with whole grains and protein (蛋白质) are better, but kids often skip fruits and vegetables. As you get older, you might snack on fast food and supersize your servings.
To keep away from problems later in life, you should snack wisely (明智地) right now. One tip is to control how much you eat. Put your snacks in a plastic bag so you will be sure not to eat too much. Here are some healthful ideas for mini-meals.
For overall health, remember to:
Eat different kinds of foods.
Watch how much food you eat.
Increase your physical activity.
Drink water or other healthful juice.
Eat three meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
30. Which of the following is the reason for snacking?
A. It provides us with energy.
B. It gets us to eat more.
C. It helps us keep fit.
D. It makes us wiser.
解析：根据文中所说Snacks can provide you with more energy (能量) between meals.
31. What does the word “skip” probably mean?
A. overeat B. accept C. enjoy D. jump
解析：根据文中所说Fresh fruits, vegetables, and snacks with whole grains and protein (蛋白质) are better,和转折连词but 断定skip文中是jump的意思。
32. What does the writer think of snacking?
A. Snacking enough can take the place of dinner.
B. Kids need more snacks to stop growing pain.
C. Kids need the right snack at the right time.
D. Snacking wisely means eating green food.
解析：根据第五段第一句You need the right snack at the right time.这句表达作者对snacking的看法。
33. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Are Snacks Good or Not? B. Why Should We Snack?
C. Do You Really Know about Snacks? D. What Can We Have for Snacks?
It was so hot out, and the AC (空调) was broken. How could Bob and his friends stay cool? They thought for a while and came up with some ideas.
Tommy put his feet in ice water. He felt cold. 34 .
Howard sat in front of the freezer (冰柜) with the door open. He ate an ice-cream and found a frozen pizza while he was in there. 35 .
Gary drank hot tea. It made him sweat (流汗) a lot and he felt very uncomfortable. Then he decided to go home early.
That left Bob. 36 . He was a little cooler. But the fan only worked for one person because it was small.
Bob’s sister, Janice, came home and turned the AC back on. She’d turned it off just to be mean, and Bob didn’t know how to work it. 37 , but Janice thought it was very funny.

When I was a 12-year-old boy, my family lived on a farm. I loved working with farm animals. Our vet (animal doctor) was a man named Dr. Robert. He ran the Galt Animal Hospital in downtown Galt. “Can I come to clean cages (笼子) at your hospital?” I asked him. Dr. Roberts said that I could.
I’ll never forget going to the hospital. I worked there every day for four summers. I worked 8 to 10 hours a day. I took part in all kinds of animal care. I cleaned cages. I watched animals being saved. I never missed a day of work. I did it for the love of working with animals.
Dr. Roberts also let me care for the animals there with him. I saw the birth of animals and the death of animals. I was bitten (咬) by animals. Anything you can think of, I was exposed to! It was an experience of a lifetime. It was also a turning point in my life. He gave me that first chance (机会) to get really close to animals.
I was very lucky. I took a chance, asked a question, and was given a greater chance. Then I worked hard. Because of these things, I found out what I wanted to do with my life—be a zookeeper and work with animals!
